JENKINS, KENTUCKY — Brenda Christine Evans, 41, of Matewan, West Virginia, tragically lost her life following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 23 near Jenkins on Thursday morning, July 2, 2026, according to the Kentucky State Police.
The fatal collision occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Pound Mountain near the Kentucky-Virginia state line. Emergency responders, including law enforcement, firefighters, and medical personnel, were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a serious traffic accident involving two vehicles.
According to a preliminary investigation by Kentucky State Police, an 18-year-old driver, identified as Elijah Stallard, was operating a pickup truck when dense fog reportedly caused limited visibility. Investigators believe the pickup crossed out of its lane of travel before striking a passenger vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway.
Brenda Evans was a passenger in the stopped vehicle at the time of the collision. She suffered severe injuries and was transported by emergency medical personnel to Whitesburg ARH Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries despite the efforts of doctors and hospital staff.
