The University of Alabama community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mark “McNeil” Mostellar, a 21-year-old student whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating fire at a hunting camp in Conecuh County, Alabama. The incident also claimed the life of fellow University of Alabama student James “Walter” Hensley, 19, leaving classmates, faculty, family members, and friends grieving the loss of two promising young men.
According to the Conecuh County Coroner’s Office, the fire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at a hunting camp located off Stowers Timberland Road near Evergreen in south Alabama. Mostellar and Hensley were among four friends spending the night at the property when the blaze erupted. Two of the occupants were able to escape and were transported to a hospital for treatment, while Mostellar and Hensley were pronounced dead at the scene.
A native of Mobile, Alabama, McNeil Mostellar was a business major at the University of Alabama and an active member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was a graduate of UMS-Wright Preparatory School, where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. Friends and classmates remember him as a kind-hearted individual whose positive attitude, dedication, and friendly personality made a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Walter Hensley, also of Mobile, was pursuing a business degree at the University of Alabama and was likewise a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon. A graduate of St. Paul’s Episcopal School, he was known for his leadership, athletic accomplishments, and strong friendships. Together, the two young men shared a commitment to their education, fraternity, and the university community.
News of their deaths has prompted an overwhelming outpouring of grief across campus and beyond. Fellow students, fraternity brothers, alumni, and members of the Mobile community have shared heartfelt tributes honoring the lives, character, and potential of both McNeil and Walter. Their passing has deeply affected all who knew them, with many offering prayers and support to their families during this unimaginable time.
As authorities continue investigating the cause of the fire, loved ones are remembering McNeil Mostellar not for the tragedy that claimed his life, but for the joy, kindness, and promise he brought to those around him.
