Authorities have arrested a suspect following a reported shooting incident at Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where gunfire prompted a significant law enforcement response and sent beachgoers scrambling for safety.

Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired near the popular beach access area. Upon arrival, officers quickly secured the scene, searched for victims, and worked to identify those involved in the disturbance.

Despite the alarming reports, investigators confirmed that no individuals were struck by gunfire, and area hospitals did not report treating any gunshot victims connected to the incident. Officials said the shooting stemmed from a disturbance during a gathering on the beach, causing panic among visitors who fled the area after hearing the shots.

Detectives immediately launched an investigation, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area. Their investigation led to the identification and arrest of a 20-year-old man from Okatie.

The suspect has been charged with aggravated breach of peace and violating the Town of Hilton Head Island’s ordinance prohibiting the discharge of firearms within town limits. Authorities noted that the investigation remains active, and additional charges or arrests may follow as detectives continue reviewing the evidence.

The incident temporarily increased law enforcement activity around Coligny Beach, with deputies maintaining a visible presence while investigators processed the scene and ensured there was no continuing threat to the public.

Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have photographs, videos, or other information that could assist investigators to contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives say community cooperation remains an important part of the ongoing investigation.
