The Bellarmine community is mourning the loss of Fr. Richard Cobb, S.J., who passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 94. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary life devoted to faith, education, and service, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped generations of Bellarmine students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
For nearly seven decades, Fr. Cobb was far more than a Jesuit priest—he was a trusted teacher, compassionate mentor, spiritual guide, coach, and friend. His warmth, humility, and unwavering commitment to others made Bellarmine a more welcoming and joyful place for everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Fr. Cobb first arrived at Bellarmine as a Jesuit scholastic in 1957, beginning a remarkable relationship with the school that would span almost 70 years. Throughout his years of ministry and service, he taught English, coached students, led retreats, served as a chaplain, worked in the Admissions Office, and dedicated himself to supporting first-generation college applicants. In every role he embraced, he carried out his mission with enthusiasm, compassion, and genuine care for every individual he encountered.
Even after dedicating himself full-time to adult spirituality, Fr. Cobb remained a cherished presence on campus. Whether attending school events or making casual visits, he continued to greet students, alumni, parents, and colleagues with the same familiar smile and heartfelt kindness that had become his trademark. His remarkable ability to remember names and make every person feel valued left an enduring impression on countless lives.
In a tribute honoring his life, Bellarmine College Preparatory President Chris Meyercord ’88 reflected on the qualities that made Fr. Cobb so beloved. He remembered Fr.
